Types of Shower Seat

Geneally there are two main types of seat for your shower. Fixed and not fixed. Then there are sub-categories of each type.

Fixed shower seats

Generally a fixed shower seat will be permanently attached in your shower. This might be to the floor, but a more popular way is to attach it to a wall. It might be foldable to keep it out of the way when not in use.

Pros

  • Generally more stable
  • Always there, waiting to be sat on

Cons

  • Always there. You cant easily remove it if required
  • Can be more difficult to clean
  • sometimes they give your bathroom a more industrial or health care look. Less homely
  • Trades men required for installation

Portable shower seats

A portable shower chair isnt attached to anything. They are designed to be moved around the home and placed in the shower when required. Usually they just fold away when not in use, but sometimes are rigid.

Pros

  • Very versatile
  • Can move out of the shower when not required.
  • Easy to clean as there are no hard to reach anchor points that sometimes go mouldy
  • Can sell on if no longer required
  • Cheaper than a fixed seat
  • No disruption for installation

Cons

  • Wont be as stable as a fixed seat
  • You will need somewhere in the home to store it

To fold or not to fold, that is the next question. A foldable shower chair will be easier to store away, but may not be as sturdy. Just something to consider before you rush out and get a foldable chair.

What are shower chairs made of and how do you choose one?

If you want a seat in a shower to last, it can only really be made of a couple of materials. They are generally made from aluminum, rubber and bits of plastic. These materials don’t rust and are durable and strong enough to have someone sat on them.

Typically the chairs come in two flavours. Either a full back chair or a stool type chair and its important to note the differences.

Shower stool

A stool type shower seat does not have a back to it. They are lighter and easier to stowe away, but do not have any back support at all.

Full back shower seat

A full back seat is more like a standard dining chair except it goes in your shower. They usually consist of a padded seat to sit on and a padded back to lean on. Sometimes they even have arms!

What to look for in a shower seat

There are lots of things to look for in a shower seat, but here are the important points :

  • Made of aluminium, or another rust proof material
  • Sturdy construction
  • Foldable if you have nowhere to store it, otherwise we would advise a fixed chair
  • Look at the size and make sure it is realistically going to comfortably fit you in
  • Read reviews and check other people have not had issues with slipping and stability
  • Get one with a full back rest and arms
  • Check the weight of the chair and make sure it isnt too much for you to move around

This is by no means an exhaustive list!
